'I can't ... please ..." The young woman protested with a deep groan as she grabbed her knees and rose up, screaming. "Aaaah! Help me … Collette ... I'm going to die …" Her voice faded as she fell backwards onto the bed, panting and trembling.

'Now now ... none of that, my girl.' The elderly voice at first spoke gently, but then commanded. 'Get up! Now … yes, that's the girl ... breathe ... in ... in .... in, and ... out; push... puuush! Almost there…' and with the release of one long, ear-splitting scream, the young mother delivered her baby into the hands of the Midwife.
